About this campaign

Get your own #TeamOctopus t-shirt to remind yourself of your own inner strength -- and with each purchase, you'll also be covering the cost of a shirt for a kid who needs it.

Inspired by the novel THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN OCTOPUS, students and teachers across the country are taking the #TeamOctopus pledge and working to:
1) Recognize our superpowers.
2) Name our obstacles.
3) Speak up.
4) Team up.

For more information about THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN OCTOPUS, visit: http://annbradenbooks.com/books/

THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN OCTOPUS is set in a fictionalized version of Brattleboro, VT, with the main different being that the actual town has a whole lot more poverty than in the book. Approximately 80% of the kids in Brattleboro qualify for Free/Reduced School lunch, but those kids also are surrounded by a community that loves them, and they are so excited to help launch a Community Read of THE BENEFITS OF BEING OCTOPUS by marching (with a GIANT octopus) in the town's July 4th parade. With every shirt you purchase, you are also covering the cost of a t-shirt for one of those kids, so they can wear their #TeamOctopus shirt in the parade and in the future as an ongoing reminder of their own inner strength.

Thrilled that Ann is spreading this message of strength above and beyond her incredible text. Do I want to march with #TeamOctopus on the fourth? Yes!

I believe that the message in this book needs to be heard!

I love the message of the campaign. I also think we need to create more awareness about the impact of poverty on children

I work in a 98% Title 1 school! Although I have studied poverty and how it relates to learning and education, this work of fiction actually gave me a better understanding of my middle school students and the lives they lead outside of school.

Lucy and I read The Benefits of Being an Octopus this year and are big fans. Lucy thought it should have won the Newbery Medal. #TeamOctopus
