About this campaign

Get your own #TeamOctopus t-shirt to remind yourself of your own inner strength -- and with each purchase, you'll also be covering the cost of a shirt for a kid who needs it.

Inspired by the novel THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN OCTOPUS, students and teachers across the country are taking the #TeamOctopus pledge and working to:
1) Recognize our superpowers.
2) Name our obstacles.
3) Speak up.
4) Team up.

THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN OCTOPUS is set in a fictionalized version of Brattleboro, VT, with the main different being that the actual town has a whole lot more poverty than in the book. Approximately 80% of the kids in Brattleboro qualify for Free/Reduced School lunch, but those kids also are surrounded by a community that loves them, and they are so excited to help launch a Community Read of THE BENEFITS OF BEING OCTOPUS by marching (with a GIANT octopus) in the town's July 4th parade. With every shirt you purchase, you are also covering the cost of a t-shirt for one of those kids, so they can wear their #TeamOctopus shirt in the parade and in the future as an ongoing reminder of their own inner strength.

All students should have access to the book and its amazing message. My heart is full thinking of the kids in Brattleboro, VT marching in their July 4th town parade wearing their new shirts. I can't wait to see pictures.
