About this campaign

Smiles for Speech is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children with disabilities around the globe. Sandy Dorsey is a black speech-language pathologist based in New York that works primarily with underserved communities. She has made it her mission to do more and make a larger impact beyond her own caseload and clients and created Smiles for Speech to achieve her vision. Smiles for Speech facilitates in-person global trips that bring US-based speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists to sites worldwide to train and equip clinicians in other countries to help them reach more children with disabilities. Smiles for Speech also participates in establishing libraries and donating equipment and other on-site resources in universities in Africa that have requested this additional support.

Prior to the global pandemic, Smiles for Speech was finalizing trips to Kenya and Ghana composed of speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists to help create libraries of speech therapy and occupational therapy books, to run in-person professional development for speech therapy students and therapists covering topics like alternative-augmentative communication, and to donate equipment to facilities. Unfortunately, COVID-19 forced the postponement of the trips. However, a box resources were sent to Kenya and the textbooks are in New York and ready to go to the University of Health and Sciences in Ghana.

There's still so much to be done to support the profession of speech-language pathology globally and to continue Smiles for Speech's organizational mission to help children with disabilities achieve their potential.

I am an SLP! I have seen first hand the awesome results when a child receives cleft lip/palate reconstruction! It is amazing how it can change their life as well as the lives of their families as it opens doors for them to finally communicate!!
