Potomac Overlook's 50th Anniversary Raptor Campaign

Potomac Overlook Regional Park of NOVA Parks is home to four non-releasable birds of prey that we proudly care for: a barred owl, a great horned owl, a screech owl, and a red shouldered hawk. Donated to us by the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia, these birds have been deemed non-releasable due to various injuries they acquired while living in the wild. These injuries would severely limit their chance of survival without shelter and human aid. Here at our park we provide appropriate shelter, food, water, and more for our raptor residents through our bird of prey enclosures. In return, they act as valuable interpretive ambassadors for our many visitors and program attendants. Because our birds are so important to us, we at Potomac Overlook are undertaking an extensive and ambitious renovation plan for their enclosures. Our mission is to make renovations that allow for simpler and safer staff accessibility to our birds, higher quality enclosure interiors with new and better materials, more pleasing aesthetics, and an overall upgrade on their current housing. Our bird of prey enclosures are a staple of Potomac Overlook and one of the most heavily visited places in our park, and we want it to be a highlight of everyone’s visit for years to come.
