About this campaign
This year our country proudly celebrates the 35th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
What you may not know is that a few months prior to the ADA signing ceremony on July 26, 1990, the law stalled in Congress. So disability activists mobilized to do something to gain the attention of legislators and the nation.
On March 12, 1990, a group of demonstrators in Washington, D.C. abandoned their wheelchairs and mobility aids to crawl up 83 steep steps of the U.S. Capitol Building, with one of the youngest crawlers being only 8 years old.
This iconic moment, known as the Capitol Crawl, was a pivotal point in a years-long disability rights movement that continues today. This historical action made a strong statement about how lack of accessibility was more than just an inconvenience – it was an affront to human dignity and human rights.
A few months after the Capitol Crawl, the ADA finally passed.
In honor of the people who crawled that day and all who continue to zealously advocate for disability rights now, we are offering this limited-edition Capitol Crawl t-shirt with the unforgettable photo by Tom Olin. (Used with permission.)
Proceeds from sales benefit Disability Rights Texas. Sales end on July 1, 2025, at 12 Midnight Central Time. Thank you for your support!
