last week, a debate broke out in the running community about slow charity athletes participating in world major marathons – in particular next year’s new york city marathon. as you can imagine, there were strong opinions on both sides, but most of the discussion stayed civil. i commented on a runner’ s world post because a response genuinely moved me. what i didn’t expect was that my comment would trigger someone so deeply that they told me i should unalive myself. ( fyi - the comment was taken down within minutes; by who, i don’t know but not before it could be seen. )

charity runners are essential to world major marathons. they generate tens of millions of dollars for nonprofits, providing critical financial, social, and community impact. they represent the inclusive, community-driven side of marathoning - balancing elite competition with real human purpose.
