About this campaign
Each year, more than 1 out of 1,000 people with epilepsy die from SUDEP. If seizures are uncontrolled, the risk can increase to 1 out of 150.
On December 31, 2021, Megan Casey went to bed & never woke up. Instead, she passed in her sleep at 23, falling victim to SUDEP — sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. SUDEP education was not provided by any of the medical professionals she saw while attempting to control her seizures that started on October 31, 2021. Two months after her first seizure, SUDEP took her life. We are haunted by the questions of “what if” because maybe we could’ve rewrote her story had more precautions been taken to protect Megan during her sleep. But that was not a danger on our radar. This is where the Megan Claire Casey Foundation comes in — To fight for a change in the initial approach. SUDEP should be on the radar from the start. Sleep safety should be highlighted when seizures are uncontrolled.
Megan was our favorite person, sister, and mentor. It’s only fitting that she continue to be our motivation & common thread. In her honor we will be running 13.1 miles later this summer. In the midst of fulfilling our own dreams, as Sydney works to finish nursing school & Tess law school, we will be running every mile for Meg. Please consider purchasing a shirt to support the Megan Claire Casey Foundation & help spread the word about SUDEP.
With light & love,
Tess and Sydney
