About this campaign

Guns are now the leading cause of death for children and teenagers. Mass shootings have exceeded days on the calendar this year. Our nation has more gun deaths than car accident deaths. New laws are hard to pass in the current political environment. Yet, there is reason for hope. Safer Country empowers the public to prevent gun tragedies. Visit us at www.safercountry.org.

Our founder and executive director, Paul Friedman, lost an aunt to a bullet in 1981. In 2016, after college, law school, and many years spent working in politics and for nonprofits in Washington, DC, he became the executive director of the nonprofit created by the families and the survivors of the Virginia Tech tragedy. In order to focus on gun violence prevention, Paul moved on to create Safer Country in 2019.

Safer Country's biggest accomplishment to date is the creation of a first-in-the-nation model red flag law public awareness campaign in Fairfax County. Its slogan is "Prevent A Gun Tragedy - Speak Up! Visit safercountry.org for details. This campaign is now expanding to other jurisdictions but Safer Country needs your help.
