About this campaign

The Puppetry Institute serves the Central Coast area striving to give the public a chance to see the beauty and artistry of the genre. Thanks to the wonderful people at the Museum of Art and History (MAH) we are fortunate enough to be starting this program at The Octagon. For the next 3 months we will endeavor to show the city, arts community, and granters what a viable investment this type of program is, by engaging young or old, local or visitor, beginner or expert, in a way that not only entertains but educates as well. Help us spread the #puppetymadness! By purchasing a shirt you'll be helping us pay for art supplies for workshop scholarships, bring in puppeteers from the around the world to share their work, and most importantly help us find a permanent home...

For the last 20 years I have tried to color outside the lines of what people expect when they think of puppets and puppeteers. In that time I have produced live puppetry performances, such as the life-size puppetry fantasy adventure “Dr. Mecurio's Mythical Marvels, the adult drama “the Dr. is out... the last 48 hours in the life of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson”, and my wild Puppet Burlesque show "A night at Miss Mimi's" funded by a performance art grant from the amazing folks at the Creative Capital Foundation in 2007.

Through it all I have endeavored to pass my art on to the next generation, instructing workshops to both children and adults on puppet design construction and performance, created a award winning workshop on designing puppets from recyclable and found items, along with summer internship programs for under-served teens. These programs taught kids a different way of solving problems by working together, and at the end, seeing with their own eye’s what incredible things that could be made from a pile of parts and their combined imaginations.
