Relay for Life, Team My Hero

We are “My Hero” a 2014 “Boot Cancer” Relay for Life team that was inspired by the life and love of Barbara Barnes.

She is truly a hero to her friends and family, she was diagnosed in October of 2012 and despite the pain and side effects she underwent chemo. However in August 2013 an unexpected turn of events happened; the cancer had eaten away at her clavicle bone and it became so weak that it fractured…the cancer took over and won in October. She is an immense spirit that will live on in every person she touched throughout her life and we want to finish the fight against cancer that she started.

The truth is that Lung Cancer patients are treated as they somehow deserve this due to their smoking; however according to the American Lung Association over 60% of Lung Cancer patients have never smoked a day in their life. In addition to honoring Barbara, we organized this team to help fight this stigma. Lung Cancer is the most deadly form of cancer, it kills more patients than Breast Cancer, Colin Cancer and Prostate Cancer combined. Furthermore, the amount of funding is severely lacking, in 2012 Lung Cancer received in funding $1,442 dollars per life lost where as Breast Cancer received $26,398.
