SHIBUKI Nagado Taiko (Large Japanese Drum) Campaign

Niagara Taiko Group SHIBUKI is a unique taiko group formed in late December 2016 consisting of twelve dedicated main members from all walks of life and rapidly expanding to include several new energetic trainees. Our group name, Niagara Taiko Group SHIBUKI or Niagara Splash, was inspired by the thunderous sound or "splash" of the magnificent Niagara Falls. Since we work with limited funds, all splash members make their own taiko out of used car tires and packing tape. We also have five small drums that we have borrowed at no cost. The drum sticks or bachi, head gear, wrist bands and taiko stands are also hand-made by the group members. We rigorously practice for hours in our own homes preparing for our performances. However, when Niagara Taiko Group SHIBUKI comes together and bangs away as a group, it is much more dramatic, challenging and exhilarating! We practice as often as possible, usually on a Saturday afternoon at a free or low cost church hall. The boisterous sound of our borrowed drums and tires with tape is similar to "real" taiko. However, the impact does not resonant as well or is as vibrant as a traditional Japanese drum. As we grow and learn more about the art of Taiko, we are reaching out to our community to assist us in the purchase of one standard main drum called Nagado taiko. Although this is a very expensive drum, it is a beautiful versatile instrument that will last a lifetime.
