The purchase of these terrific t-shirts helps save the lives of horses who are currently owned by kill buyers. They will be sent to slaughter for their price per pound as meat, and they do not deserve this horrible fate! We need your help to save them, and you can do so by purchasing a t-shirt! All donations are 100% tax deductible and go 100% to helping horses. We are Save Our Standardbreds From Slaughter, the volunteer branch of a 28-yr old 501(c)3. We work day and night to save lives, and we need your help!
Will you help us save the lives of some very special horses? Their time is up, and they face certain death without your help! SOSS - Save our Standardbreds from Slaughter - The typical life journey for a racehorse: the racing industry has not provided options for horses that are no longer productive (whether on the track or for breeding). Typically in the Northeast, they are sold to horse dealers from rural, religious communities in Pennsylvania who frequent the tracks and training centers. Most are then run through livestock auctions and face the horrific trip to the Canadian or Mexican slaughterhouses. The small percent that are spared the trip are used by these communities for the rest of their lives for transportation, and as work horses, often toiling day and night under harsh conditions. Very few are treated with care, as there are so many. After working several years (until their bodies wear out), they are commonly sold for fresher, younger horses (at about the ages of 11-17). At that time, they are run through livestock auctions, where nearly every horse is purchased for slaughter by what are known as “kill buyers”. These buyers, before they ship them, offer them for sale to earn a little more profit. This is how SOSS, Save Our Standardbreds from Slaughter, was born. SOSS is a dedicated group of volunteers who work day and night to solicit help in the way of donations and homes for these desperate horses so they can be purchased and saved from the horrific trip to their deaths. The Standardbred Retirement Foundation (SRF), a registered 501(c)3, assists these volunteers by accepting donations and distributing these funds to save these horses. Some horses also come to SRF for help. Many of the horses are sound, some have old racing injuries and need a home as a companion, others have been abused and neglected along the way, as many remain in the “dealer” pipeline for months, being sold from livestock auction to dealer, to auction and another dealer, and no one is concerned with their care. All need donations to be removed from this brutal journey, and homes where they can live out their lives, safely. The Standardbred is a sturdy horse with a very lovely temperament, and wonderful manners, similar to that of a Quarter Horse. They are handled since they are yearlings, and are used to traffic and crowds. They are willing to learn, and do so quickly, making them great riding companions for any discipline, including English and Western trail and competition. They can do anything any other breed can, and people say they have a “brain”. Without your caring support, the SOSS has no way to help, not even one. Please step up for a horse in need.
