Last year, what started as a routine surgery for an umbilical hernia turned out to be something much more serious. During the operation, doctors discovered gelatinous material in Andrew's abdomen which had caused the hernia. After further testing and pathology, it was discovered that he has a rare form of cancer called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), originating from a tumor in the appendix.
Since this discovery, Andrew has undergone two major operations to remove as much of the cancer as possible. This diagnosis has turned the family's world upside down. It has required traveling all over the country to consult with different surgeons, attend appointments, and complete extensive testing. Most recently it has meant a long stay in Minnesota at the Mayo Clinic for Andrew's second procedure. Though great progress has been made, additional surgeries will be required in the future.
