The Road We've Sharedis a new online community designed to meet the specific needs of people who love and support adults who have Down syndrome. Existing groupstend tofocus on young children. This is the first community created by and for the majority population of adults with Trisomy 21. Our loved ones are the first generation to be fully "mainstreamed" in public education. Our expectations for adulthood include opportunities for creative and individualized solutions. We need access to different resources - i.e. legal concerns about guardianship, job and social opportunities, statelaws that affect services, adult health concerns including the link to Alzheimer's disease, and ideas for accessible living spaces, either at home or within the community . Through an online community, we can support each other and providecaregivers and self-advocates a venue to have their voices heard, even if it's just to tell their own personal story. The Road We've Shared values and respects all perspectives on how we got here and where we're going. Our first "in person" event is scheduled for the annual convention of theNational Down Syndrome Congressto be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, July 11-13. Since we are just starting out (we launched in January, 2014) we are currently raising money to cover expenses forone member of the team (even though we'd all love to be there) to attend the conference as anexhibitorin order to spread the word about our new community.
