Imagine you are sitting on the frigid, unyielding floor in a facility where the harsh light unceasingly reminds you of the unfamiliarity of your situation. Your cries for your mom and dad fall on deaf ears as officers double or even triple your size march around barking orders. Fear and heartache mix to become this awful hurt in your heart.

In detention centers across the United States, this is the experience of thousands of children, many of whom are younger than five years old. As I read about their experiences, sadness and despair weighed heavily on my heart. I wanted to do something, anything to help remedy the pain these children are feeling. I am sure that I am not the only one who feels this way, which is why I started this t-shirt fundraiser for the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.

All proceeds will go to the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, a human rights organization that advocates for the rights of immigrant children. They train Child Advocates, who familiarize themselves with the child and his or her wishes, family situation both here and in the home country, and physical, mental, social and health needs, to ensure that the best interests of individual immigrant children are advocated for when decisions are made regarding the child’s uncertain future. Currently, to address the crisis of separated immigrant families, the Child Advocates are deeply involved in the effort to reunify families, setting up phone calls, coordinating travel arrangements, and following up with families in the aftermath.

Every t-shirt that you buy and every dollar that you donate will ease the suffering of a child in an immeasurable way. Providing each child with someone who will advocate for his or her rights in a system set up without the best interests of immigrant children in mind is a literal lifeline. If you are debating whether or not to buy a shirt, just remember that the more people buy a shirt, the lower the cost of production, and therefore more money goes to the kids! Wearing the shirt spreads the message that hope in our shared humanity can overcome even the most brutal injustices, if we only have the courage to make our voices heard. You can make your voice heard. You can make a difference. You ARE the difference that will spread hope.
