2022 marks the 9th year for the Phelan Lucky campaign. Phelan Lucky originated as a grassroots effort to raise local awareness in Wilmington, Delaware for Phelan-McDermid syndrome, the rare disease our middle child, Jack, was diagnosed in 2002. The idea was to design a shirt that would not only be suitable for a St. Paddy’s Day celebration but also solicit questions (thanks to a clever play on words) about PMS. Since its inception, the campaign has grown into an incredible international event to raise funds for the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation, raising awareness for the 2,800+ families whose lives have been touched by this rare condition.
PMS is a rare genetic syndrome caused by a deletion or variant on the q arm of chromosome 22. Individuals with PMS are often diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum disorders. They also frequently have severe cognitive disabilities, are nonverbal, and have a propensity for seizures and sleep disorders, in addition to many other behavioral and medical issues. Currently, we are aware of over 2,800 individuals who are diagnosed with PMS worldwide; there are likely many more, but PMS often goes undiagnosed.
2022 also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the foundation. That same year Jack was born, unbeknownst to us, 20 determined families along with Drs. Phelan and Rogers, began the process of starting what is today known as the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation. We never could have imagined back then what a huge part of our lives the foundation and the families who are members would come to mean to our family. We truly are Phelan Lucky for the information, support, direction, and hope that they continue to provide for us, and other families like ours.
With your support, PMSF has made and continues to make huge strides in the areas of research, support, and awareness, in addition to connecting families all over the world to one another.
With the sale of each shirt, we can continue to raise awareness, help increase diagnosis, fund research, and find treatments that can change lives. On this special anniversary year, we’ve placed our main logo on the back of the shirt to symbolize looking ‘back’ at where it all started. With a lofty goal of selling 9,000 shirts this year, we are ready to create the future!
