COTA for EMMA DAWN

Emma is a true fighter since birth in February 2022. Initially discharged with a clean bill of health, Emma's first week revealed troubling symptoms - increasing colic and jaundice. Despite dismissal by pediatrician, persistent concerns led to a diagnosis of Biliary Atresia (BA) at 8 weeks old.

BA, a rare liver disease affecting 1 of every 15,000 births, left Emma's bile ducts scarred, hindering bile flow and damaging liver cells. A Kasai procedure was attempted in April 2022 aimed at trying to save her natural liver, but by 5 months old, it proved to be unsuccessful, necessitating a liver transplant.

Placed on the UNOS transplant list at 10 months old, Emma's resilience in the face of liver failure has been remarkable. However, increasing complications have lead to Emma being dual listed in Dallas and Colorado, enhancing her chances of finding a donor.

Now two years old, Emma remains happy and full of life, and has matched with a wonderful non-directed living donor in Colorado. She continues to bravely confront the challenges of her disease while waiting for surgery in June 2024.
