About this campaign

ITP is a rare blood disorder in which, sometimes without known cause, the immune system destroys platelets, which are necessary for normal clotting. Certain immune system cells produce antibodies against the platelets. Antibodies attach to the platelets, and the body (mainly the spleen) destroys the antibodies. 3 in 100,000 people per year are diagnosed with this. 1% of those experience a hemorrhage. Devin was one of them, and he passed away in September 2019. We are raising awareness of ITP, and funds for PDSA, who fund research and provide support resources for families battling ITP.

Devin also had an extremely rare disorder called ALPS - autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome. With this condition, the body over-produces immune system cells (lymphocytes), causing enlarged lymph nodes, liver and spleen. Without steroid or other treatments, the body then creates antibodies attacking these, and ultimately, can lead to the body attacking its own red or white blood cells, or platelets. Cancer of the immune cells (lymphoma) is also likely. Devin was 13th in the world to have this disorder. Now there are about 500. In Devin's case, it turns out ITP was a symptom of his ALPS condition.

Devin is my nephew. The pain of losing this sweet, wonderful soul has been almost unbearable for our family. If there’s anything we can do to help someone else never have to go through this pain, we will do it!
