Children's National Race for Every Child

The Children's National Leukemia/Lymphoma team is participating in the Race for Every Child to advance world-class care and groundbreaking leukemia/lymphoma research at Children’s National Hospital.

Our mission is to provide support and treatment options to children with leukemia and lymphoma in the greater DMV area. Leukemia is the most common form of childhood cancer, making up about 30% of all childhood cancer diagnoses each year in the United States, and lymphomas make up about 11%. The 5-year survival rate for childhood leukemia in the mid-1970s was 50%. With advances in medicine and research, that 5-year survival rate now exceed 85%. Our newest immunotherapy drug, blinatumomab, has impacted B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia survival rates most significantly. A very recent pivotal Phase 3 study (AALL1731) showed that the 3-year disease-free survival was 96% for children who received blinatumomab combined with standard chemotherapy, compared to 88% for those treated with chemotherapy alone - making blinatumomab our new standard of care.

Even though survival rates are improving, we still have work to do. We are not at 100% yet.
