Is Your School Paying the Turnout Tax?

Our 2026 School Spirit Gap Survey found that schools with a recurring spirit wear program are more than twice as likely to report higher event turnout. Here's what to do about it.

The Problems the Data Revealed — and How We Solve Them

The survey didn't just document what organizers struggle with. It quantified the cost — and pointed to what works.

The Turnout Tax

Schools with a recurring spirit wear program are more than twice as likely to report higher event turnout compared to schools with no program.

A recurring annual program — same timeline, same design process, every year — is what closes the gap. Our Design Lab, Online Stores, and design experts make that repeatable process straightforward to build.

The Distribution Headache

67% of organizers say distribution is a major challenge. The top pain point: 47% can't reach families who miss pickup events. The gym shirt-sort, the unclaimed stack, the families who never got their order — these are symptoms of a process problem.

Our group order feature lets every family order individually, pay separately, choose their own size, and receive their gear at home — no pickup event, no unclaimed inventory, no chasing down sizes.

The Last-Minute Swag Conundrum

43% of organizers haven't committed to a spirit wear program — often because the timeline feels too tight. But schools without gear still pay the Turnout Tax, even when time is short.

We offer rush and Super Rush delivery options for when the event is close. And with no minimums on many styles, a small run for a single class or team is as straightforward as a school-wide order.

The Fundraising Shift

87% of K12 organizers have used spirit wear to raise money. 73% say it outperforms traditional methods — candy sales, coupon books, and catalog fundraisers — in both revenue and participation.

What the Data Actually Says About Spirit Wear and School Outcomes

From the 2026 School Spirit Gap Survey

The clearest finding in our survey was about program structure. Among the organizers who run a recurring spirit wear program — same timeline, same process, every year — 33% report higher-than-expected turnout at their school's last major community event. Among schools with no program, that number is 14%. The 43% of organizers in the inconsistent middle land at 22%: better than nothing, but still paying a measurable tax in community attendance and school pride.

The pride data is sharper still. 61% of recurring-program schools strongly agree that spirit wear has meaningfully contributed to school pride. Among no-program schools, only 16% strongly agree. That 45-point gap is the Turnout Tax in its clearest form — and it's driven not by the shirt itself, but by whether the school treats spirit wear as a recurring, intentional program.

What a Recurring Program Actually Looks Like

  • A fixed annual timeline: Same order window, same delivery date, every year. Organizers stop starting from scratch each fall and start building on what worked.
  • Community-owned design: 58% of organizers say student or staff design involvement meaningfully increases participation. Our Design Lab makes co-creation practical — classes, clubs, and committees can share concepts and vote on designs before a single shirt is ordered.
  • Distribution that runs without a pickup event: Our group order feature collects individual orders, payments, sizes, and shipping addresses — so every shirt reaches the family that ordered it, at home.
  • One vendor for all of it: 72% of K12 organizers currently use two or more vendors. We handle t-shirts, hoodies, drinkware, hats, and more — design, production, and fulfillment, all through one order and one conversation.

K12 Organizers Who Built Recurring Programs

Every year we order kindergarten t-shirts. We all get the same design, but each of our seven kindergarten classes get a different color. We wear our t-shirts for field trips, kindergarten celebrations, track and field day, and all school picnic. It shows kindergarten pride and lets us know which student belongs to each teacher. We have been using Custom Ink since we started this tradition. We always LOVE our t-shirts and the LOW PRICEs. We are already designing next year's shirt!

We, the whole school, celebrated the end of our school year together with an all-school Field Day. There were 11 events each class participated in, teamwork was our focus, and our entire staff was involved. We had a beautiful day to celebrate our community. It was incredible to look out across our campus and see it dotted in green, yellow, red, and blue.

Frequently Asked Questions

The key is locking in a consistent annual timeline — same design window, same order deadline, same delivery date every year. Our design experts can help you structure a repeatable process, and our Online Stores give your school a permanent branded storefront that families can shop any time — not just during a single ordering window.

Our group order feature lets every family order and pay individually, choose their own size, and have their gear shipped directly to their home. There's no pickup event to plan, no unclaimed inventory, and no organizer sorting shirts in the gym. Each family gets exactly what they ordered, when they need it.

Yes. You can order the same design in multiple shirt colors in a single transaction — useful for field day team colors, grade-level distinctions, or staff vs. student designs. Our design experts can help you coordinate multiple color options within one order.

Many styles have low or no minimums, so a single classroom of 25 and a school-wide order of 800 both work within the same ordering process. Check the product detail page for style-specific minimums, or contact our team for guidance on which styles fit your group size and budget.

Our Design Lab makes student-involved design practical — classes, clubs, and committees can share design concepts, see live previews on actual products, and collaborate before a final design is submitted. You can also start from a template and let students customize from there. Our survey found that 58% of K12 organizers see a meaningful increase in participation when students are involved in the design.

87% of the organizers in our survey have used spirit wear to raise money, and 73% say it outperforms traditional fundraising methods. Our Online Stores make spirit wear fundraising straightforward — set your retail price, share the link, and families order, pay, and ship independently. No upfront cost to the school, no inventory to manage.

Orders with free standard shipping arrive in approximately two weeks. If your event is closer than that, rush and Super Rush options are available for an additional charge. Contact our team if you're working against a specific deadline and we'll walk you through the fastest realistic path.
