Author Jon Katz says it all....we cannot lose these magnificent horses to end up living in quiet desperation or worse; we cannot let the carriage business owners lose their livelihood in the name of corporate greed and false promises.
I have been involved with a horse rescue group for years and know that these NYC horses are not abused. Let them carry on!
The whole ban is a travesty. Let the mayor go to the stables and see the horses - talk with the drivers - and then state his case in an informed way, if he feels he still has a case. Political patronage is not a valid reason for this outrage.
The mayor's campaign to band the carriages has nothing to do with animal rights and everything to do with real estate and greed. He's never even toured the stables.
There are so many reasons why banning these horses is a bad idea. Like the NYPD mounts, most are rescues. Older horses need homes and jobs and these beautiful animals bring charm and life to Central Park.
Live on 10th Ave. and 54th. The horses are an important part of my neigborhood. And, of course, the horses and their drivers have a right to make a living.
So sad to see that this time honored tradition is being threatened by a group of misinformed animal rights activists. What's next - police horses and service dogs?
I appreciate the horses and drivers in Central Park, and I am well aware of what will happen to the horses if they are banned- that is NOT supporting animal rights. The statistics speak for themselves; why are politicians in NYC not listening? Greed.
I have owned horses all of my life so I am aware of their use and care. From what I see you people do a great job. Your horses have better care than a lot of the horses I have seen in rural Massachusetts. Good luck in you battle. Anne Phillips
