About this campaign

Our friend and former colleague, Nikki, is currently battling glioblastoma, a rare but aggressive form of brain cancer, often resistant to conventional treatments. The medical bills are piling up yet so is Nikki’s positivity and optimism, which is truly inspiring! Nikki worked in both art and merchandising at Custom Ink until she realized her true calling as an elementary school art teacher. She now works in the Arlington County (Virginia) school system and raises her two beautiful children with her husband Mike.

Nikki made a poster for herself and her students when returning to the classroom after parental leave in 2018, then displayed it again during distance learning at the start of the fall semester of 2020, and now in 2023, with this diagnosis, she is reminding herself and all of us that she “can do hard things.”

In Glennon Doyle’s memoir “Untamed,” she refers to “doing hard things” as a process of stepping out of one's comfort zone, confronting fears, and taking on challenges one might otherwise avoid. Through her journey of self-discovery and healing, she developed the mantra, "I can do hard things," signifying her inner resilience and strength. Since we’re in this WITH Nikki, WE can do hard things.

Join us in celebrating Nikki’s strength and spirit and showing that we too believe she can do hard things.

“While I cherish the time I spent getting to work at Custom Ink with Nikki, when she left to pursue being an elementary school art teacher, it just made sense. She is that kind, encouraging, magical soul you imagine being an art teacher. But she's also a badass and because she's determined to do so, I know she's going to fight until she wins. I want to make sure she has as little to think about outside of getting as healthy as possible.” – Kristin

“Nikki and I have primarily kept in touch through social media, sharing snippets of our lives. But her current situation mandated an in-person visit so I could see her smile and hear her laugh firsthand. We vowed not to forget the importance of connection and friendship again, so I look forward to more hugs in our future. I hope this fundraiser honors Nikki’s optimism in the face of difficulty and provides some funding to relieve her of additional stress at this time.” – Allyson

“Nikki is a powerhouse who has always been a beautifully creative person! It’s one thing to 'Do Hard Things' but it’s another to do them and make them mean something positive for yourself. She’s shown such bravery throughout this journey that she is walking in, and it has inspired a whole community to be brave with her and her family. We are in your corner Nikki--and I will be proud to wear a piece of your art always!” – Arlie

We encourage all who know and love Nikki, and even those simply moved by her story, to join us in rallying around her now! Once an Inker, always an Inker!!
