99 Minutes of Neuro - Delivered by Dr. Puder & MOT Students at SMU
" “Ninety-Nine Minutes of Neuro” is a neuroscience educational outreach program created and implemented at Samuel Merritt University (SMU) in Oakland, California. It was was designed by Dr. Barb Puder, Chair of Basic Science Dept. to educate all school aged students about 'their amazing brain' through presentations, posters, and interactive hands-on activities. The photo shows the SMU Master of Occupational Students who delivered the Dec. 10, 2016 session which taught an audience of over 100 High School Science Academy students from West Contra Costa County to: 1. understand the brain and how it works; 2. make healthy lifestyle choices regarding their brain; 3. encourage the pursuit health-related careers.
Many of the student attendee audiences enrolled in the health academy programs are from low income, disadvantaged households where some will be the first generation to attend college. "Ninety-nine minutes of Neuro" supports the high school health academy students and builds a pipeline of middle school and elementary school-age students that inspires an interest in neuroanatomy, neuroscience and health-related careers.
The superb CustomInk products provided terrific enthusiasm and excitement for our SMU student instructors and attendees. The T shirts were funded by an American Anatomy Association grant were provided for student volunteers and presenters. CustomInk tote bags were given to each attendee.
