MAPSCorps Chicago

"This is a group of mappers and field coordinators from our summer employment program, MAPSCorps. Each summer, groups of high school students from Chicago are teamed up with college and graduate students, and together they walk up and down every block of their 100-square-mile mapping region to track which businesses and organizations are open and operating. Teams also develop scientific posters about specific questions related to the health and vitality of local residents and communities, which they then present at a symposium at the end of the summer. Community members and business owners now come to expect mappers in their neighborhoods every summer, and they can easily recognize them by their bright shirts. This is the first year we tried CustomInk, and as the picture shows the results are amazing! The shirts are bold and beautiful, and the mappers appreciate that they're lightweight for those days when the sun is out and the temperatures are high. In this picture, mappers are posing with staff of NowPow, the first health information technology company to open on Chicago's South Side. We hope that as mappers finish high school and go to college, they will learn more about STEM or healthcare so they can return to their communities and continue to make a positive impact at places like NowPow.
